I binged this show in one day. I moved to a Katrina affected area just one year after the storm devastated New Orleans and this series took me right back in time to that period of my life. It’s hard to believe it has been 20 years! Although it was at times tragic, even infuriating, to hear about the trauma inflicted by this event I came away feeling enchanted by the people. Vann fearlessly questioning “Brownie” (but with compassion and genuine curiosity), Lt Gen Honore recounting how he brought order to incompetence, many others telling their stories of survival and self-determination. And most of all, Lee-Ann who is probably one of the most courageous and inspiring women I’ve learned about. This series is heavy, but the last episode is all about love and hope. A can’t-miss production!

Thank you so much for this. This was very enlightening. I was out of the country studying abroad when this tragedy happened. Hearing the news from so far away it was heartbreaking. Knowing the true story of what happened now I do value and appreciate so much. Everyone needs to listen to this. Atlantic please do a story on the fire in Lahaina and the rebuilding process. The locals need to shed more light on what is truly happening. The Hawaiians cannot be displaced again.

With the approach of the 20th anniversary of Katrina, New Orleans has been much on my mind. I did not watch the hurricane hit in real time, as I was moving apartments that weekend, and this was before the days of smart phones and social media. But once I was back online, I remember feeling incredibly angry. Angry that the citizens and city of New Orleans were left to drown. Angry that poor people were once again being screwed over. Angry that the US government did not care. This podcast brought up all of these feelings, but it is important to remember and understand the factors that led to such a catastrophe. Even more important is to undo the systematic racism that exists still today.

Episode 8 blew me away! Holy cow, Michael Brown! Not a very emotionally intelligent man. Made me so angry to listen to him make justifications rather than just owning his mistakes AND APOLOGIZING! A heartfelt apology goes a long way towards healing.
